Why is wool better than feather and down?
Feather and down requires you to adjust the temperature by moving the filling, causing you to sometimes wake in the night. Wool works for you adjusting your temperature naturally by absorbing excess moisture away from your body so you remain at a comfortable and more even temperature throughout the night.
It is also comforting to know that wool is a naturally non-allergenic fibre and at MiniJumbuk we further enhance this by specially treating our fillings and fabrics for lasting freshness and effective control against dust mites. This makes MiniJumbuk quilts an ideal choice for people with asthma or allergies.
MiniJumbuk wool quilts also provide a more comfortable environment when two people, who have different body temperatures (i.e. one hot and the other cold) sleep in the same bed. This is due to wools unique ability to adjust your body temperature naturally. Bed making is easy and a simple shake, smooth and its done!
Why are wool quilts better than synthetic quilts?
Can you shake the filling down?
Does the wool move?
No. The one piece wool filling is quilted together with the outer fabrics. This provides you with an even distribution of warmth and no cold spots. See the answer to question 3 above.
Is the filling 100% pure wool?
How heavy is the quilt?
MiniJumbuk quilts are not heavy to sleep under as they lay gently over you, not on you. An approximate comparison would be a similar weight to a 50:50 feather and down quilt.
It is difficult to state an exact weight for wool quilts, as they will vary according to the relative humidity of the room. Since wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture, this makes a considerable difference to the measured weight of the quilt, depending on the humidity of where it is weighed.
How warm is it compared to blankets?
It is difficult to give a woollen quilt a blanket rating because blankets themselves vary enormously and quilts operate in a vastly different manner to blankets where weight and type of fibre relates more directly to their warmth rating.
In winter, a wool quilt insulates you effectively, keeping you warm and cosy. This can be the equivalent of three quality blankets. In summer, the same wool quilt absorbs excess moisture (and excess heat) away from your body, keeping you cool and dry. This can be more similar to 1-2 blankets. It is fair to say that MiniJumbuk wool quilts are all designed to keep you comfortable over a wide range of temperatures throughout the year.
MiniJumbuk also produce a range of quilt filling and casing weights for those who prefer a lighter or cosier feel. Ask your local stockist for advice on which range might best suit your needs.
What are the differences then between wool quilts and blankets?
- MiniJumbuk quilts can provide more warmth for less weight.
- MiniJumbuk quilts covered in fine cotton casings and are specially treated for lasting freshness and effective control of dust mites, ultimately looking after your health.
- MiniJumbuk quilts make bed-making fast and easy.
- It's more cost effective to buy one MiniJumbuk quilt than three blankets to get the same amount of warmth.
Will it go flat?
The wool used in MiniJumbuk products has been carefully chosen and treated to reduce flattening and felting. Our unique wash&LOFT process maintains the loft and life better than other products that don't have this treatment.
In the case of MiniJumbuk pillows, the standard wool blend pillow filling is a special mix of wool and polyester used to increase loft and springiness. MiniJumbuk also produce pillows with a latex core for those who prefer a pillow that continually returns to its original shape.
All products flatten to some degree, but MiniJumbuk have taken great care to minimise this problem with our wash&LOFT process and special blend of wools.
What if the product is too hot or too cold for me?

How can the same product suit me for summer and winter?
QUILTS:
Have you ever spilt nail polish remover on your hand and felt the cooling sensation as it dries? This is caused by evaporation. The same principle applies when your wool quilt absorbs moisture away from your body in summer; it cools your body. In winter, when you're less likely to perspire, a wool quilt's insulation properties keep you snug and comfortable. Only on the hottest summer nights, when a sheet may be enough, are customers likely to fold back their MiniJumbuk quilt.
UNDERLAYS:
In winter, MiniJumbuk underlays insulate you against cold striking up from the mattress beneath. In summer, just like wool car seat covers, the wool is more comfortable beneath you than synthetic materials. Also, all our double-layer underlays feature a cool cotton reverse surface which can be used for summer sleeping if you prefer.
How can we overcome the problem of two people sleeping at different temperatures?
This is very common with one person sleeping hot and the other sleeping cold.
MiniJumbuk quilts can overcome this problem because wool's ability to absorb and dissipate excess heat away from your body helps maintain an even temperature throughout the quilt. This takes away that clammy feeling sometimes associated with feather or synthetic fillings, keeping the cooler sleeper warm and cosy while the warmer sleeper stays dry and comfortable.
Are MiniJumbuk products suitable for people with allergies?
We have many reports from customers suffering allergies or respiratory problems who are delighted with the comfort they experience using our products. Wool, unlike feathers, is naturally non-allergenic.
Most household allergies are caused by the common dust mite. Through the years, MiniJumbuk have developed new technology, better processing and new treatments to largely overcome this problem. Our fillings and wool piles are all treated with Ultra-Fresh.
Do you use any chemicals in your products?
MiniJumbuk use minimal treatments to improve the cleanliness and loft of our products and to make them healthier.
The following treatments are applied: Scouring The wool off the sheep's back is thoroughly washed in detergent to remove dirt and vegetable matter. Ultra-Fresh Provides lasting freshness and effective control against dust mites. wash&LOFT A conditioning treatment to improve loft and cleaning.
Will my MiniJumbuk product prickle or itch because it's wool?
No. MiniJumbuk products are NOT itchy to the skin. Just feel a sample if you need to be convinced.
Wool above a certain micron rating (measurement of the coarseness of the fibre) may feel itchy to sensitive skin. This level, 35 microns, is known as the prickle factor and has been confirmed through tests conducted by the Woolmark Company and the CSIRO. This level of coarser wool is often found in furnishings, carpets or cheaper imported clothing.
It is the reaction to such coarse wool that often leads people to mistakenly believe they are allergic to wool. In fact, there have been no reported cases of anyone being allergic to the wool fibre itself.
MiniJumbuk only use wools much finer and softer than the prickle level. This means they are also too soft to push through our finely woven casings and the sheets that cover our underlays.
Being wool, will the products smell with moisture?
No. Once in use, and when maintained in accordance with the care instructions, all MiniJumbuk bedding products remain fresh and hygienic. In addition, the Ultra-Fresh treatment provides lasting freshness and effective control against odour-causing bacteria and mildew.
Will my MiniJumbuk product shed wool fibres?
How is wool so good at absorbing moisture, and why do you combine it with cotton?
Why do I need an underlay?
- You spend over a third of your life in bed, so it's important that you are comfortable.
- One in 10 people in Australia suffer from arthritis.Wool's natural warmth helps to keep muscles relaxed and relieves arthritic pain.
- MiniJumbuk underlays relieve pressure points, spreading your body weight more evenly.
- Independent tests prove that sleeping with wool helps maintain a lower, more consistent heart rate so you sleep more soundly and more comfortably.
- Underlays help protect and prolong the life of your mattress. MiniJumbuk underlays help regulate body temperature and provide better air circulation, keeping you warmer in winter and cooler and dryer in summer.
Why do I need an underlay if I've just bought a new mattress?
MiniJumbuk underlays protect and increase the life of your mattress. Wool is more comfortable than synthetic fibres and many mattresses are made of foam.
MiniJumbuk underlays are specially designed to relieve pressure points and to spread your body weight evenly. This provides a healthy, more comfortable surface that keeps you warm and dry in winter and maintains an even body temperature throughout the year.
In summer you can flip your 2-layer MiniJumbuk underlay over and sleep on the cool cotton side for extra comfort. MiniJumbuk underlays insulate you from cold air striking up from your mattress keeping you warmer in winter naturally.
Independent tests by the Hohenstein Research Institute in Germany prove that sleeping on wool helps maintain a lower and more consistent heart rate, bringing sounder, more restful sleep.
