As September rolls around again it is time to celebrate Father’s Day. Each year on the first Sunday of spring we recognise the importance of Dad’s and Granddad’s in our lives. Many families have long standing traditions; some elaborate weekends away and others as simple as a phone call, breakfast in bed or a fun family meal. For those enjoying Father’s Day in the Limestone Coast, there are a myriad of ways to spend the day.
Create your own ‘boys own’ adventure story, four-wheel driving or fishing the rugged coastline. After a wet winter inland swamps are full; pack a picnic and try your luck catching a yabby or head to Bool Lagoon for a stroll along the boardwalk and some bird watching. Sports enthusiasts can partake in a bit of friendly family rivalry. Test your skills on one of the many picturesque golf courses, cheer your favourite team in the local footy finals or just head to the park and make your own rules.
If the weather turns nasty, you can always keep warm and dry exploring the world heritage listed Naracoorte Caves. Offering superb food and a glass of famous ‘terra rossa’ red, the Coonawarra wine region has many restaurants and cellar doors to discover. You may strike it lucky, unearthing one with live music and a roaring fire. Of course there is always the option of staying home. What Dad wouldn’t enjoy relaxing and being spoilt, enjoying his special day surrounded by his family? You could really show your appreciation and laugh at his jokes!!
And the MiniJumbuk dad’s – what are they up to? Well, they are a pretty low key bunch of family men! Darren is looking for a game of golf with his son before lunch with his children and grandchildren. Father-to-be Danny is catching up with his dad, angling for a few tips for next year while father of five, Jeff is hoping for eggs on toast with lots of cuddles. Rick will be up early for his daughter’s 8am soccer match before a delicious family brunch and Retail Manager Oliver is hoping for fine weather to mow his lawn – maybe his kids could do it for him. No sleep in for this lot but we hope they all have a great Father’s Day.
