The Best Way to Treat Common Bedding Stains

The Best Way to Treat Common Bedding Stains

A lazy breakfast in bed, sick children, an ageing family pet - any of these could be the cause of an accident resulting in an unwanted spill on your luxurious wool quiltor mattress topper.

Wool is an extremely durable fibre, and advanced wool treatments and technological improvements in both washing machines and clothes driers, have improved the washability of many woollen bedding products. However wool bedding is generally not designed for regular washing and in many instances, should you experience a spill, your bedding product will benefit from a simple spot clean, rather the full laundry service to remove the stain.

In order to avoid a permanent mark, it is essential to attend to any accidental spills or stains immediately. Initially, try to minimise the area of damage, by blotting liquids with paper towel or a clean cloth and scraping away any solid spills. Ensure you dab at liquid, as rubbing wool will damage and felt the fibres. Once you have contained the area, use the following tips from the Woolmark Company to treat the stain.

  • Black Coffee - Mix alcohol and white vinegar in equal parts, soak a lint free cloth in the solution and lightly dab the stained area before pressing gently with an absorbent cloth.
  • Blood - Remove excess blood immediately with a damp sponge, then gently dab the area using undiluted white vinegar followed by cold water.
  • Chocolate / White Coffee / Tea - Dab gently around the edge of the stain with a cloth soaked in white spirit before following instructions for black coffee.
  • Urine /Vomit - Solution of one teaspoon of approved wool detergent with one teaspoon of white vinegar and one litre of warm water.

These simple solutions, using readily available household cleaning products will treat any spillages quickly and inexpensively, and in most instances with fabulous results.
