Do you curl up into a tight ball or spread yourself from corner to corner of the bed? Body language, or non-verbal communication, has been used for centuries to gain insight into the personality, thoughts and feelings of family, friends and rivals alike. But did realise that your facial expression, body posture and use of space provide information to those around you even when you jump into bed at the end of the day?
Director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service in the UK, Professor Chris Idzikowski, analysed several common sleeping positions. His research concluded 95% of the population has a favorite sleep position and that there is a clear correlation between that sleep position and an individual’s personality. So how do you sleep and what does it mean?
Those who sleep tucked up like a newborn, interestingly, the most common position particularly with women, tend to have tough exteriors but are big softies on the inside. This group is generally conscientious and organized and whilst they may appear shy initially, will quickly relax and feel at ease.
Social butterflies tend to be side sleepers with arms straight beside them. These sleeping logs are friendly, carefree and trusting, sometimes to the point of being gullible.
Similar to the log but sleeping with outstretched arms, these sleepers tend to be complicated. Open minded, yet often suspicious and sometimes cynical, a yearner will consider any decision carefully before very definitely making up their mind.
Sleeping to attention on their backs, arms held firmly beside them, soldiers dislike fuss. Strong and reserved, they enjoy structure and generally have high expectations of themselves and others.
Like a skydiver, free fallers sleep flat on their stomach, head on the side and arms splayed. Outwardly gregarious and brash, inwardly nervy and sensitive, this group avoids disapproval and risky situations.
Lying on their backs, arms and legs spread wide these sleepers make great friends. While they may use more than their fair share of the bed, starfish are great listeners and are always ready to offer assistance.
