MiniJumbuk has been handcrafting Australian woollen bedding for nearly 50 years. In Naracoorte, South Australia, you will find our iconic MiniJumbuk Factory and Outlet, where we continue to pioneer the use of wool in our range of Quilts, Mattress Toppers, Protectors and Pillows.
At the rear of our outlet, and a favourite with our customers, is the viewing platform that provides a fabulous view over the mill. Here you can watch our amazing team busily working away to create our luxurious quilts, pillows and underlays. What you see today is a far cry from the humble beginnings of our proud Australian company.
MiniJumbuk attributes its name to the small, handmade, woollen sheep – ‘mini jumbucks’ crafted by local farmers wives using the bones of chicken saved from dinners at the Kaniva hotel. These small souvenir sheep are the foundation on which today’s business is built.
Initially, owned and operated by Isobel Miles and her husband Geoff, the transition from sheep to quilts almost happened by mistake. Having dropped an armload of wool on top of a freezer, they discovered that wool offered excellent insulation properties and decided that would be perfect for making a quilt.
And so one of the first commercial wool filled quilts, the ‘Downswool Kwilta’, was born.
With the introduction of quilts the business expanded rapidly. To house their new equipment, a carding machine and two second hand industrial sewing machines, the Miles moved their operation to new premises in Naracoorte, and with an increasing workload, Isobel approached her neighbour Don Wray with a partnership offer.
Don, a larrikin ex-shearer was as passionate about wool as Isobel, and a great fit for the business. Four years later, Don bought the fledgling business from the Miles and proceeded to further expand the wool bedding business. Don added both pillows and underlays to his product range.
Today, while many other aspects of the business have changed, these bedding basics remain the foundation of the MiniJumbuk business.
