Beachport & Southend

Beachport & Southend

Beachport and Southend

The beautiful seaside town of Beachport boasts one of the longest jetties in South Australia, and rarely does a day go by without anglers of all ages trying their luck at landing a prized catch. Beachport is one of the oldest historic whaling ports in Australia, located on the north-western tip of Rivoli Bay, not far from Robe on the Southern Ports highway on our wonderful Limestone Coast. Beachport is steeped in history and has plenty of attractive historical buildings.

The town has a relaxed atmosphere with some lovely gift shops and eateries. There is plenty of safe swimming off the sandy beaches and the mild conditions make Beachport a perfect spot for a range of water sports. A little inland is Lake George which is a popular spot especially with bird watchers. Don't forget your binoculars and keep an eye out for black swans and the chance to spy a rare orange-bellied parrot that occupies the coastal saltmarsh and beach dune habitats.

The Pool of Siloam is unique to Beachport. With a salt concentration seven times greater than the sea, it is an ideal swimming spot creating unusual buoyancy, and has a reputation for its powerful healing properties. For the more adventurous, explore Beachport Conservation Park by four-wheel drive. Take in the coastal scenery, escape to secluded beaches and see intriguing shell middens.

Just 15 minutes drive from Beachport is the small fishing village of Southend. Here you can find a magnificent coastal cliff top walk that reveals how the powerful forces of nature have created the dramatic coastline of the Limestone Coast. The short, well-marked walk includes intriguing cliffs, sea stacks, reef platforms and the stunning Rainbow Rocks. Well worth a visit.
