School's out and there are six glorious weeks of summer holidays to spend with your kids. For some this is their idea of heaven, while others may need a few hints on how to keep the cherubs amused. If you are heading to the Limestone Coast there are stacks of options that are sure to entertain children of all ages and interests.
South Australia's Limestone Coast region is located south of Adelaide, stretching down the coast from the Coorong National Park in the north to the Nelson River in the south and extending inland to the Victorian border. The region boasts miles of majestic, unspoiled beaches and with the weather warming up, what a perfect spot to be! Imagine an idyllic day, relaxing at the beach with the family. Younger children will enjoy paddling in the rock pools or trying their luck off one of the regions many jetties. Older ones can challenge themselves with beach fishing, canoeing or even a surf lesson. Coastal towns Robe, Kingston and Beachport are home to a range of shops, cafes and restaurants, ideal for replenishing the energy reserves before the next adventure.
Inland towns, Naracoorte, Penola and Mt Gambier will also delight holiday makers. The Naracoorte Caves & Wonambi Fossil Centre, South Australia's only World Heritage listed site has more than 100 known fossil deposits. Children will love learning about giant marsupials or may dare to try adventure caving. Penola combines cultural heritage with historic charm and the opportunity to visit a fantasy theme park complete with model railway.
Need more? There is wine tasting in the Coonawarra, where several wineries offer a kid friendly environment, a family day at the Naracoorte Races, summer holiday programmes such as VacSwim or the Natural Resources Coastal Connections or even a trip to the movies. With these ideas to get you started and loads more to be found, every family will remember the summer they spent in the Limestone Coast.
