What is a Duvet Day?

What is a Duvet Day?

Did you know that some UK businesses allow their employees to take a day off, at short notice without being sick? In fact, some are including what they refer to as 'duvet days' as one of the perks in their employment packages. So what exactly is a duvet day? Once you realise that 'duvet' is the British term for quilt, it is far simpler to imagine what a duvet day is. Basically, it is a day dedicated to complete rest and relaxation, best accomplished by spending the day in bed.

Imagine, those days when the alarm goes off and all you want to do is roll over and go back to sleep. A duvet day means you can do exactly that, with both you and your employer reaping benefits that include: Improved brain power - A study undertaken at the University of Pennsylvania in 2010 discovered that a single sleep-in can boost awareness and improve the attention span of exhausted young adults.

  • Enhanced energy levels - while a duvet day is a short term solution, the same study established that more sleep equates to more energy. The study noted that sleep quality is more restorative than duration in terms of boosting energy.
  • Reduced stress levels - with the constant and increased busyness of everyday life, a duvet day is the perfect opportunity for some self-indulgence. Ignore the outside world for a day. Snuggle in to your quilt, and focus on relaxing and rejuvenating your soul.
  • Boosted immunity - sleep plays a vital role in an effective immune system. At the first sign of symptoms, try reducing the length and severity of minor ailments by grabbing a duvet day.
